These and other public health interventions have added 25 years to our life span, making millions of us healthier and more productive than generations before us by deepening our understanding of the effects of diet, exercise, pollutants, chemicals and diseases on our health.

As one of the top schools of public health in the country, UCLA has been at the forefront of many of these findings.

20th CENTURY PUBLIC HEALTH MILESTONES

  • Decreased infant mortality by 90 percent and maternal mortality by 99 percent
  • Reduced incidence of coronary disease by 51 percent
  • Eradicated many crippling or deadly infectious diseases such as typhoid and cholera
  • Added 25 years to our lifespan
