Dear Fielding School Community,
I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to serve as the next dean of the Fielding School of Public Health, and tremendously excited to be joining you in the New Year.
This is an extraordinary time to be working together on public and population health. There are immense opportunities for effective research, training, and programs – with more information than ever before, not only on the impact of poor social and environmental conditions on health, but also on the tools to transform these conditions, with universal health care being rolled out in the United States for the first time, and with a new global commitment to ensuring public health and health care for all around the world.
The Fielding School community of faculty, staff, students, and alumni is doing invaluable work in public health in Los Angeles, across the country, and around the world. I am thrilled to have the chance to work with you to increase our understanding of the best approaches to solving major public health problems, and at the same time to ensure that the knowledge gained is translated into change on the ground that transforms people’s lives.
We are incredibly fortunate that we can do this at a time when we don't need to choose between deep commitments locally and equally strong ones globally. We are able to work hand in hand with colleagues in Los Angeles, as well as public health researchers and program leaders around the world. We can share lessons from local successes and challenges with others around the world facing similar problems, and learn from them about innovative approaches taken to common problems.
I am greatly looking forward to working with you and learning from you as we increase the impact that our research and training have on public health locally and globally. To those on or near campus, I look forward to the chance to meet and speak together in the New Year; to those around the world, I look forward to finding equally effective ways to connect.
All the best,
