Director of Development

Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Affairs, the Director of Development will build and sustain a growing portfolio of major gift prospects and donors to support key priorities of the Fielding School of Public Health, including student support, faculty research, addressing the most urgent needs of the school, and other priorities identified by the Dean of the School.

The Director will independently solicit current use and endowment gifts, write case statements and proposals, develop strategic long-term and annual fundraising plans, evaluate progress to goals and maintain active awareness of donors in the prospect pool at various stages of identification, cultivation and solicitation. This individual will also design, implement and manage a comprehensive, sophisticated and creative stewardship program that inspires donors to consistent and greater giving and acknowledges the non-monetary contributions and success of Fielding School alumni and friends. This includes leading and overseeing staff to design and facilitate individualized stewardship strategies for all major gift level donors; write comprehensive annual donor stewardship reports; and maintain an accurate record of all existing funds, endowments, fellowships and chairs. The Director will serve as a liaison to Student Affairs and Finance to ensure that all donor funds are spent in accordance to donor gift agreements and ensure donor funds are utilized and reported to donors. This individual will ensure that donors receive appropriate recognition in publications, building signage, recognition events and the Donor Honor Roll. The Director will also provide strategic and operational direction with regard to the Fielding School’s 60th Anniversary, future capital projects, and other campaign and development issues and participate in the design and implementation of long-term goals and objectives to achieve maximum impact in priority areas and meet both annual and long-term fundraising goals for the Fielding School of Public Health. In addition, the Director will meet regularly with faculty and staff in priority areas and gain knowledge of research interests and areas of expertise and will establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with appropriate individuals and offices in the School and across UCLA.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible development experience with an emphasis on major giving fundraising, preferably in public health, and/or prior professional experience in a related field such as sales, marketing or business development.
  2. Proven track record in development or comparable program planning and management with a strong understanding of major gift fundraising, preferably in a public health setting.
  3. Proven skills in developing and implementing successful strategies for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gifts from individual donors or solicitations of a similar scope, nature and complexity.
  4. Strong documented record of gifts solicited and closed in the major gifts range and/or solicitations of a similar nature, level and complexity.
  5. Outstanding organizational skills and proficiency in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner and on deadline.
  6. Experience with diverse academic research topics to include the ability to understand and translate clearly and succinctly faculty research and its relevance to potential donors.
  7. Exceptional interpersonal skills with experience working with diverse groups including; donors and alumni of all ages, income levels and political persuasions; staff; faculty; students; trustees and volunteers; government, corporate and foundation officials; and the general public.
  8. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  9. Experience participating in strategic planning.
  10. Ability to interpret financial data for fund tracking, donor stewardship practices and draft customized endowment and other stewardship related reports.
  11. Innovative with ability to think strategically about donor engagement and generate creative solutions for stewarding donors in order to maintain and strengthen high-quality individual relationships with donors.
  12. Ability to navigate and be effective within a complex organization.
  13. Self-starter who works equally well independently as well as collectively and collaboratively with colleagues to achieve common goals.
  14. Must be able to travel to sites within and outside the state to represent the School with ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  15. Demonstrated skill, knowledge and ability to create, execute and oversee a comprehensive stewardship program is preferred.
  16. Familiarity with current issues of public health is preferred.
  17. Advanced degree is preferred.
