2018 LA Marathon

Getting Started FAQs

What is Team FSPH?

Team FSPH is the marathon team of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. Led by the Dean, it includes students, alumni, staff, faculty and friends who come together to raise money for student fellowships for summer fieldwork while having fun and increasing fitness. Runners can opt to run the full marathon (26.2 miles) or the Stadium vs. Sea Charity Challenge (about 13 miles). Participating in the Charity Challenge is the only way to run the rough equivalent of a half marathon in the LA Marathon.

When is the LA Marathon?

The marathon will be on Sunday, March 18, 2018. Yes, that is very close to winter quarter finals. But running (or walking) is a great stress reliever!

If I join Team FSPH, do I have to pay for my marathon registration?

No! If you are a student, FSPH will cover the cost of your registration, a value of at least $170. (Note: Registration will be through FSPH, not the marathon.) In addition to free registration, you’ll also receive a complimentary FSPH wicking shirt.

How much money do I have to raise if I join team FSPH?

Each runner on the team has to raise a minimum of $650. (But don’t stress. See below.)

I am a busy grad student. How am I going to raise $650?

It’s a lot easier than you think! First, you will utilize a user-friendly, customizable online fundraising platform. This platform makes it easy to reach out to friends, family, colleagues, and others to ask them to donate. In addition, the friendly FSPH Development team will support you with fundraising tips, ideas, and strategies to help you succeed. Last year, virtually every runner on Team FSPH met the minimum fundraising goal. And some runners raised much more!

I’ve never run more than a few miles at a time. Can I still join the team, and will I be able to finish?

Yes! A number of our past participants were new runners and succeeded in finishing the race. Walking/running is also a great option.

What are my training options?

Consider joining the FSPH Run Club ( to meet and train with other Team FSPH runners. In addition, team members will be invited to a training run and brunch hosted by the Dean. You can train solo or join one of the training programs available through the marathon

This sounds great! How do I get started?

Come to the Team FSPH information session November 15th at noon (room TBD). During this meeting, FSPH staff and past team members will provide you with additional information about this exciting opportunity to increase your fitness, make new friends, and raise money for summer fieldwork!
