Department of Epidemiology Seminar Series: Dr. Julia Simard - "Pregnancy in Contemporary Systemic Lupus"

Pregnancy is complicated for women with systemic lupus. Much of what we know about their risks come from patients who were either sufficiently healthy with uncomplicated lupus or who got pregnant despite their doctor’s advice. However, patients are no longer unequivocally told to avoid pregnancy simply because of their disease history. The risks in the full spectrum of pregnant women with lupus are still being investigated, as they pertain to parity, comorbid conditions, and medication. In this talk, Dr.

Terror Here? Challenges and Lessons from the 2011 Terror Attacks in Norway

On May 30th, Fielding School of Public Health welcomes experts Dr. Henrik Syse, Dr. Melissa Brymer, and Dr. Robert Pynoos to discuss the July 22, 2011 terror attacks in Norway, which targeted a government building and a youth summer camp.  A total of 77 people were killed. The panelists will discuss who was impacted, approaches to mitigating trauma, immediate and ongoing responses or policies to address terror, and the role of media advocacy. Furthermore, the panelists will discuss what lessons we can learn for addressing gun violence and terror in our own community.

Dept. of Epidemiology Introductory Mendelian Randomization Workshop

Mendelian randomization (MR) utilizes the particular properties of germline genetic variation to strengthen causal inference with respect to modifiable influences on health, disease and social outcomes. This session will present the assumptions required for MR and the ever-expanding range of sensitivity analyses and falsification strategies that are available. Hypothesis-free causal search strategies based on MR will be briefly touched upon, as will the application of MR to molecular and tissue-specific phenotypes.
