Biostatistics Seminar: Scalable Bayesian sparse regression: accelerated posterior computation via prior-preconditioned conjugate gradient method with application to observational healthcare data

January 30, 2019

In a modern observational study based on healthcare databases, the number of observations is typically in the order of 10^5 ~ 10^6 and that of the predictors in the order of 10^4 ~ 10^5. Despite the large sample size, the data rarely provide enough information to reliably estimate such a large number of parameters. Sparse regression provides a potential solution to this problem. Bayesian sparse regression via shrinkage prior is a noteworthy alternative to the conventional penalty based approaches.

Epidemiology Faculty Candidate Presentation | Beyond the individual: Innovative approaches to contextualize opioid use and address mental health

January 29, 2019

About the Lecture: Widespread availability of prescription opioids, heroin, and fentanyl impacts patients, family members, and society. An important question has been the extent to which family dynamics, pain, and mental health inform the psychosocial context of opioid use and contribute to the opioid crisis. This seminar will describe recent research that uses large administrative healthcare databases and innovative epidemiologic methods to understand social and clinical factors that affect opioid use.
