The Dean's Award is presented to an individual or organization whose financial support and involvement have significantly helped the Fielding School of Public Health fulfill its mission of improving the public's health through teaching, research, and service.

Dr. Jonathan Fielding has dedicated his entire life to improving the public's health. As a high school student, he won a competition to be a county public health director understudy for a day. That experience would mark the beginning of a lifelong passion as he went on to earn his medical degree and his master's degree in public health from Harvard University, and an MBA. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Today, this public health visionary - a UCLA faculty member for more than 30 years - is Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, where he is a tireless supporter of policies and environments that produce better health for individuals and populations. His wife, Karin, shares his passion for public health through her involvement in helping improve the lives of disadvantaged children in our county.

Together, the Fieldings have a big vision: to improve health for all, reduce suffering and eliminate disparities in health, not only locally but globally. And they hope this vision will inspire a new generation of public health leaders.

With their generous gift - the largest in the school's 50-year history - the UCLA Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health is poised to propel the field of public health to even greater heights, and to serve as an inspiration to tomorrow's leaders as they work to change lives for the better through the power of global public health.
