Nearly a quarter of all expenditures in the United States are for health care. Yet, despite the huge sum, approximately $2.5 trillion in 2009, our spending is not producing a good return on investment. Health outcomes are much worse than those of other developed countries. The Institute of Medicine  estimates that we spend between $750 to $765 billion in excess of what we should be spending to acheive our current suboptimal health outcomes. Dr. Jonathan Fielding, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and an expert in health expenditures, will discuss the opportunity costs of health care-related spending and explore what might happen if funds were redirected toward other productive initiatives, many of which have the potential to improve population health outcomes.

Continuing the Conversation webinars feature UCLA Fielding School of Public Health faculty discussing the most critical issues in public health.
