During the recent record-breaking outbreak, the virus picked up a mutation that made it better at infecting human cells.

“It isn’t possible to determine definitively if these mutations are responsible for the changes in scale and length of the most recent epidemic,” says Anne Rimoin from the University of California, Los Angeles.
