Dr. John Clemens, professor of epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, is co-recipient of the 2018 Prince Mahidol Award.
Dr. John Clemens, professor of epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, is co-recipient of the 2018 Prince Mahidol Award from the Royal Patronage Kingdom of Thailand for his work in developing an oral cholera vaccine.
Clemens will share the award with Dr. Jan Holmgren of Gothenburg University Vaccine Research Institute in Sweden. Together they have developed the first low-cost oral cholera vaccine, Shanchol, which has been used to treat millions of people at risk of developing the infectious disease.
Every year, the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation confers two awards to individuals or institutions that have helped advance medicine or public health. The foundation will present Clemens, who also serves as executive director of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, and Holmgren with the award in early January in a ceremony in Thailand.
