With the holiday season approaching, the U.S. is experiencing its largest surge in Covid-19 cases yet. And health experts expect high caseloads and hospitalizations to continue into the new year.

Although new infections and deaths dipped Thursday, the country on Wednesday broke records in every key metric, with the number of new cases reported in a day hitting 247,403, hospitalizations rising to 113,069 and deaths topping 3,656, according to data from Johns Hopkins University and the Covid Tracking Project.

As the virus’s spread began to level off in the Midwest, where a surge in cases and hospitalizations during much of the fall led to fresh restrictions in many places, regions along the coasts began to see their own rises in early to mid-November.
