Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, we have witnessed the surge of racism, xenophobia, and discrimination targeting Pacific Islander, Asian, and Asian American communities. We write today to share our grief for the murder of eight people Tuesday evening in Atlanta and to denounce the appalling violence inflicted on the Asian community.
We know that for many of us this tragic news hits close to home and may provoke sadness, anger, and also anxiety. We express our heartfelt condolences to all who have been affected by these acts of hate. If needed, we encourage you to seek support to assist with coping and facilitating healing during these troubling times.
UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is available to assist students and UCLA Human Resources Employee Counseling is available for faculty and staff. Also, if you believe you have experienced an incident of discrimination or harassment, please report it to the UCLA Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (UCLA EDI), the FSPH Office of Student Affairs, or the FSPH Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

We must continue to call out the root causes of hate and violence, and we must remain committed to upholding our values of creating an anti-racist, anti-xenophobic, diverse, equitable, and just FSPH community.
