This book analyzes the United States' health system, following a uniform template that has been used for the analyses of other countries' health systems by the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies (a consortium of the World Health Organization, the World Bank, the European Community, and several countries and universities). It considers the strengths and weaknesses of the US health system, as well as incorporates the recent adoption of the Affordable Care Act.

Dr. Thomas Rice, co-author of United States of America: Health System Review, is a professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. His research focuses primarily on health economics and current issues in health policy, such as the role of competition in health care reform and managed care.
