Additional Information for Doctoral Candidates | Policy for Participation in Commencement

If you are a doctoral student completing your degree and intending to participate in the Spring 2025 Fielding School of Public Health Commencement, please note the following policy and plan accordingly. The following policy is in alignment with the Division of Graduate Education’s policy on participation in the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony.

All doctoral students wishing to participate in the June 2025 Commencement and have their name listed in the commencement program MUST have filed and all committee members must have approved by June 2, 2025.

If a doctoral student files their dissertation after June 2, 2025 but before June 13, 2025, he or she can participate in the commencement ceremony but will not be guaranteed tickets for guests and WILL NOT be guaranteed to have their name listed in the commencement program.

If you are planning to file in the Spring Quarter, you MUST submit a copy of the “E-mail Dissertation Submission Completion Confirmation” from Graduate Division to Arlecia Powell-Halley, aphalley@ph.ucla.edu in the Office of Graduate Student Services BEFORE you will be eligible for your tickets.

Please contact Arlecia Powell-Halley at aphalley@ph.ucla.edu if you have any questions.

Caps and Gowns

Graduates are responsible for renting OR purchasing their own cap, gown and hood for the ceremony. Ordering can be completed through Graduation, Et Cetera. Questions should be directed to Graduation, Et Cetera (A-Level of Ackerman Union, 310- 825-2587).

  • The rental regalia is a standard black gown, flat cap, and blue hood.
  • TIME SENSITIVE NOTE:  For those graduates who wish to order fine regalia that is specific to UCLA (blue gown, tam and tassel that is custom sized), regalia must be purchased no later than mid-April, as delivery takes approximately 8 weeks.
    • Any questions?  Contact Graduation, Et Cetera.
  • Once you login, select Master’s Cap, Gown, Hood and Tassel. Choose Public Health MPH hood (Salmon color); PHD hood (Blue); or MS hood is gold/black tassel. For best service and sizing, please place your order early.

If you are receiving your PhD degree, you should purchase/rent a Royal Blue hood.

NOTE: Graduation, Etc. is the official Jostens vendor for the purchase and rental of regalia. Thus, they are licensed to reproduce the official UC colors and brand their gowns as University of California. There are other regalia vendors with whom you wish to do business. However, please note that we have no corporate responsibility information from their factories to determine where their materials are being resourced, or how/where they are being produced.

Tips for preparing your gown for your big day:

  • Remove the gown from the packaging and place on a hanger to allow the folds to fall out, and hang your gown in a high humidity area. Otherwise, it will be very wrinkled.
  • If you wish to press your gown, turn it inside out and press with a warm, not hot iron. Steaming is also an option.
  • Because it has a tendency to get very warm in the auditorium, please wear lightweight clothing underneath your regalia.

Diplomas

Diplomas are produced by the UCLA Office of the Registrar. The name that is reflected in your official university record (not your preferred name) will appear on your diploma. If you would like a different name to appear on your diploma, please complete the Name Change or Correction form and return it to 1113 Murphy Hall no later than the last day in your degree-expected term in order to be reflected on your diploma.
