Dr. Michael Ong, a professor in the UCLA Fielding School Department of Health Policy Management and of medicine at UCLA, was interviewed by CBS News about e-cigarettes and their associated health risks.
“Traditional cigarettes are definitely the worse thing possible to potentially use; (and while e-cigarettes) don’t have as many carcinogens and as many health harms as traditional cigarettes, they still have health harms – nicotine is one of the most addicting substances that we know,” Ong said. “We also know that there are cardiovascular effects from nicotine, and particularly for youth, there are brain effects that also happen, particularly developmentally, and they also affect memory. They are not a benign product overall.”
