Dr. Dylan Roby, an associate professor in the UCLA Fielding School's Department of Health Policy and Management, was interviewed by CNBC about the U.S. health insurance industry.

" ... insurers use tools such as deductibles, co-pays, and prior authorization — or requiring approval before certain treatments — to control costs. Industry experts say companies are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence to review claims, and that can sometimes lead to inaccurate denials. 

'It's all part of the same business model — to avoid paying as many claims as possible in a timely fashion,' " said Roby, who also serves as a researcher at the UCLA Fielding SChool's UCLA Center for Health Policy Research.
