Dr. Na He, international public health leader, recognized as distinguished alum by UCLA Fielding School of Public Health
Dr. Na He (Ph.D, '03), has been inducted into UCLA Fielding's Hall of Fame.
Dr. Na He, professor of epidemiology and the dean of School of Public Health at Fudan University in Shanghai, has been inducted into the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health’s “Alumni Hall of Fame” for 2025.
“Fielding School of Public Health’s globalized vision and mission on protecting and promoting the health and well-being of vulnerable populations are deeply rooted in the graduates,” He said. “Now matter where we are and no matter how challenging it is, take collaborative action for public health.”
In December, seven distinguished graduates of UCLA Fielding were recognized for their work since graduation as having a major impact on public health, in Los Angeles and globally. He’s public health career has included extensive research and implementation experience in HIV epidemiology, prevention and intervention and has served as a consultant for China nationwide anti-HIV/AIDS campaigns since 2004.
Those elements of his work were cited by Dr. Roger Detels, a physician and distinguished research professor of epidemiology and infectious diseases at UCLA Fielding, who nominated He for the Hall of Fame.
“His extensive collaborations with institutions like UCLA Department of Epidemiology, China’s National Health Commission, and the China CDC highlight his commitment to collaboration in public health,” Detels said. “He has shown courage in tackling socially sensitive health issues, advocating for vulnerable populations.”
He received a bachelor’s degree in medicine in 1991 and master of science in epidemiology in 1994 from Shanghai Medical University, and his doctorate (Ph.D) in epidemiology from UCLA Fielding in 2003, with extensive training in molecular biology at the Hadassah Medical School of Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel from 1996-1997.
The latest honorees join a list of more than 90 UCLA Fielding School of Public Health alum, ranging from the classes of 1963 to 2019. Nominees are considered by a committee made up of the UCLA Fielding Public Health Alumni Association Board and serving faculty members.
“Public health improves the lives of millions of people, and it connects human to human and nation to nation,” said UCLA’s Chancellor Dr. Julio Frenk, distinguished professor in UCLA Fielding’s Department of Health Policy and Management, who gave the keynote speech for the event. “This year’s Hall of Fame inductees embody this global nature of public health. They demonstrate how it brings people together. across languages and cultures, for a common good.”
