KTLA-TV in Los Angeles interviewed Dr. Anne Rimoin, professor in the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health's Department of Epidemiology and the Gordon–Levin Endowed Chair in Infectious Diseases and Public Health, about COVID-19 variants.

"Six years after the COVID-19 national emergency was declared, health officials are beginning to monitor a new, heavily-mutated variant, known as “Cicada.”

'The reason it’s called Cicada is because like the insect, it’s appeared, went quiet for a while, and then has re-emerged,'  said Dr. Anne Rimoin, director of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health's Center for Global Health Security. “What makes it really important is that it has a lot of mutations, it's been changing over time, it’s emerging in many, many places, but it is still relatively low in terms of the number of cases. It’s just important that we watch it.”
