The Lancet quoted UCLA Fielding's Dr. Onyebuchi Arah and Dr. Ralph Frerichs in a feature obituary about the late Dr. Roger Detels, former dean of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and a pioneering HIV/AIDS researcher, who died July 25 in Los Angeles. Detels was 89.
"He really trained so many people around the world who did change things in their community,” said Dr. Onyebuchi Arah, professor and chair in UCLA Fielding’s Department of Epidemiology. "He knew that if someone didn’t get their act together to start creating large cohorts and trying to understand the natural history of the (AIDS) disease, we’re not going to make any progress."
Also quoted was UCLA Fielding’s Dr. Ralph Frerichs, professor emeritus in the Department of Epidemiology.
“He started out intending to go the clinical route, but he always had a broader orientation and was always adventuresome,” Frerichs said. “(Detels) decided he wanted to be in an academic setting and have students around and people to talk to about ideas.”
