Nature interviewed UCLA Fielding Dean Kari Nadeau, professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, about research she has led into firefighters' exposures to health risks during and after the 2025 Los Angeles County wildfires.
"Her team also analyzed the proteins, RNA, cells, and chemicals in firefighters’ blood and found that those who had tackled urban fires had higher lead and mercury levels than did those who had fought forest fires. They are now working with the Los Angeles fire department on a long-term health-outcomes study to try to help prevent, track, and treat disease, she adds."
