UCLA Magazine | Commentary: "Rising to the Call"

The worst wildfires in the history of Southern California called for action and solutions. I am proud UCLA has offered both.

The 2025 wildfires brought heartbreaking loss and destruction — and became the worst natural disaster in the history of Los Angeles. Yet even as the fires raged, the UCLA community came together, responding with both urgency and unity. Bruins opened their homes, extended a hand, and stayed connected. With big lifts and touching gestures, we mobilized our deep reservoirs of kindness.

That spirit of connection defines us. We not only support one other, but we look outward and find ways to connect with our wider communities. UCLA is not just a university in Los Angeles. It is a university of Los Angeles.

That commitment guided the work of more than 40 UCLA experts from across our campus who stepped in to help reimagine our beloved city following the fires. They brought expertise in climate science, engineering, ecology, public health, urban planning, law and other disciplines.

Together, they developed a blueprint for recovery and long-term resilience — from restoring natural habitats and improving emergency response systems to strengthening infrastructure and preparing communities for the growing threats of climate change. Their work — much of which continues today — is rooted in research, shaped by service, and inspired by hope.

We are One UCLA.
