American Journal of Public Health | “COMMENTARY: AJPH as a trusted source for maternal vaccination recommendations”

Maternal Vaccination Recommendations

The American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) published a commentary co-authored by UCLA Fielding’s Dr. Robert Kim-Farley, professor in the departments of Community Health Sciences and Epidemiology, on a partnership between the AJPH and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, to help widely disseminate a maternal immunization schedule.

"Maternal vaccination occupies a distinctive place in the history of prevention through vaccination. Vaccination during pregnancy protects two patients at once: the pregnant person and the fetus/infant who, in the earliest months of life, is too young to receive many vaccines directly or has insufficient time to develop protective antibodies (e.g., to safeguard against neonatal tetanus). In this sense, maternal immunization is not simply an obstetric intervention. It is a life-course public health strategy that links pre-pregnancy, prenatal, postpartum, newborn, pediatric, and family medicine care."
