UCLA Fielding School of Public Health Professor Anne Rimoin (MPH ’96), an internationally recognized epidemiologist and global health leader, has been appointed associate dean of global health, effective August 1.

Rimoin’s work addresses emerging infectious diseases and global health security, particularly at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health. Through her research, training, partnerships, and public engagement, she has helped advance understanding of evolving health threats and strengthen public health in Los Angeles and around the world.

As associate dean of global health, Rimoin will lead the development and implementation of UCLA Fielding’s global health strategy; build and expand alliances with universities, governments, public health agencies, and other organizations; increase research, academic, and professional opportunities for faculty, students, and alumni; foster collaboration across the school and university’s global health community; support philanthropic development; and represent UCLA Fielding in relevant university, national, and international initiatives.

“Anne is an exceptional scientist, communicator, and connector,” said Dr. Kari Nadeau, dean of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. “For more than two decades, she has produced consequential science, built enduring international partnerships, strengthened local scientific capacity, and trained the next generation of public health leaders. Anne is uniquely qualified to bring together UCLA Fielding’s considerable global health strengths and position our school for even greater innovation and impact.”

A professor in UCLA Fielding’s Department of Epidemiology, Rimoin holds the Gordon-Levin Endowed Chair in Infectious Diseases and Public Health. She also serves as director of FSPH’s UCLA Center for Global Health Security. Rimoin’s responsibilities as center director include serving as an expert institutional voice on national and international global health security issues and as a special advisor to UCLA’s Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost on global health security.

Rimoin is also the founder and director of the UCLA-DRC Health Research and Training Program, which she established in the Democratic Republic of the Congo more than two decades ago. Working in close partnership with Congolese researchers and public health institutions, she has built a sustained platform for infectious disease research, surveillance, scientific training, and workforce development in one of the world’s most complex public health environments.

Her work has generated important evidence on emerging infectious diseases, helped shape public health policy and preparedness, and created research and training opportunities for generations of U.S. and Congolese scientists and public health practitioners. Her approach to global health is grounded in long-term, reciprocal partnerships and the advancement of locally led science.

Rimoin has served in prominent national and international scientific and advisory roles, including with the World Health Organization. An internationally recognized science communicator, she has helped policymakers, public health leaders, and the public understand rapidly evolving infectious disease threats.

“UCLA Fielding has extraordinary global health expertise across its faculty, students, alumni, and partners,” Rimoin said. “My goal is to bring those strengths together, create new opportunities for research and training, and deepen the equitable partnerships on which meaningful global health work depends. Global health is entering a period of significant change, and this is a moment to think purposefully about what comes next and to develop new models for collaboration, research, training, and impact.”
