Two years after creating a master’s program designed to meet the ever-increasing need of the health industry for data analysis experts, the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health celebrated the achievements of the program’s first graduating students.

The “hands-on experience” element of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health’s new bachelors’ degrees was in full evidence among the presentations at the program’s capstone event this month at UCLA Fielding. Fifteen student teams presented their projects in areas ranging from improving oral health for school-age children in Los Angeles to providing better support for caregivers in Long Beach.

The UCLA Fielding School of Public Health's Dr. Jingyi Jessica Li, professor in the Department of Biostatistics, is among a distinguished group of 198 scholars, scientists and creative professionals from the U.S.

A team led by UCLA Fielding School of Public Health (UCLA Fielding) researchers has received a $2.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve risk assessment for those suffering from diabetes and related complications.

UCLA Fielding School of Public Health's Dr. Gang Li co-authored research that finds chronic stress and an unhealthy diet may work together to fuel the early development of pancreatic cancer. Along with serving as a professor of biostatistics, Dr. Li also serves with UCLA's Johnson Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the UCLA Health system.

Joseph Zoller, PhD, is a Lecturer in the Department of Biostatistics at the Fielding School of Public Health. He earned his doctoral degree in Biostatistics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he conducted research under the guidance of Dr. Steve Horvath and Dr. Christina Ramirez. His research is centered on the development of statistical tools for measuring biological aging in humans and animal models, with a specific focus on DNA methylation-based biomarkers of aging, known as epigenetic clocks.
