Suchard research into infectious disease outbreaks

KNX-FM interviewed Dr. Marc Suchard, a physician and professor in the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health's Department of Biostatistics, about his research into improving techniques to track infectious disease outbreaks.

"Our tools watch and examine how the genetic blueprint of infectious diseases change over time and spread from individual to individual," Suchard said. "Recently we've been exploring the spread of highly pathogenic influenza from cattle farms here in the U.S., and because of these developments we're very close to pinpointing what is the cause of transmission from cattle farm to cattle farm ... the faster and quicker we can get an understanding, not only in on-going epidemics but in future pandemics, the sooner that we can introduce public health interventions to help reduce the spread."
