Milwaukee Journal Sentinel | "Congressional candidate Alfonso would back voucher system for Medicare”
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel interviewed Dr. Naomi Zewde, assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management, about Medicare.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel interviewed Dr. Naomi Zewde, assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management, about the U.S. Medicare health insurance system.
Zewde said that under a voucher system, Medicare payments likely would not keep pace with rising health care prices and would create a gap that enrollees have to fill with their own dollars.
“That gap is the point. So, it’s really nothing other than deteriorating the value of Medicare,” she said. “Insurance companies should be competing to deliver us more affordable products, but instead we just keep paying more and more, or we just have worse coverage and higher deductibles. Why would it be any different in the Medicare context? The choice to have worse coverage? Is that an important choice for us to protect given the consequences of that for people’s access to care.”
