Mother Jones interviewed Dr. Arturo Vargas Bustamante, professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management, about research he co-authored that suggests as many as 1 million Latino Californians may withdraw from Medi-Cal because of changes in federal and state regulations.
These could include as many as 380,000 children who are U.S. citizens, researchers said.
"Many factors 'suggest that immigration enforcement has led to what is commonly known as the chilling effect,' said Arturo Vargas Bustamante, faculty director of research at UCLA's Latino Policy and Politics Institute."
