Commencement Speaker | Dr. Diana Ramos (MPH '04)

Dr. Diana Ramos, California Surgeon General, delivered the 2023 commencement address. Ramos, who earned a Master of Public Health degree from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health in 2004, was appointed California Surgeon General by Governor Gavin Newsom in September 2022. Responsibilities of the role include driving solutions to California’s public health challenges and advising the Governor. Ramos’ priorities as surgeon general include addressing mental health, reproductive health, adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress. FSPH Graduate Instructions

Pre-Ceremony Check-in (4:00pm): Lobby on west side of Royce Hall Auditorium. (Not the front lobby, but to the left, as you are facing the auditorium entrance).

  • Check in with your department student affairs officer or representative and pick up the RSVP card. Check for accuracy.
  • Line up for processional.
  • Staff will provide final instructions just prior to the beginning of the processional regarding entering the auditorium, going up onto the stage, and exiting the auditorium once the ceremony is completed.
  • Please leave your belongings with your family and friends after you check-in.

Additional Information for Doctoral Candidates | Policy for Participation in Commencement

If you are a doctoral student, completing your degree and intending to participate in the Spring, 2023 UCLA Fielding School of Public Health Commencement, please note the following policy and plan accordingly. The following policy is in alignment with the Graduate Division’s policy on participation in the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony.

All doctoral students wishing to participate in the June 2023 Commencement and have their name listed in the commencement program MUST have filed and all committee members must have approved by June 5, 2023.

If a doctoral student files their dissertation after June 5, 2023 but before June 16, 2023, he or she can participate in the commencement ceremony but will not be guaranteed tickets for guests and WILL NOT have their name listed in the commencement program.

If you are planning to file in the Spring Quarter, you MUST submit a copy of the “E-mail Dissertation Submission Completion Confirmation” from Division of Graduate Education to Arlecia Powell-Halley, aphalley@ph.ucla.edu in the Office of Student Services BEFORE you will be eligible for your tickets.

Caps and Gowns

Wearing a cap and gown is required for participation in the Commencement Ceremony processional. If you have not already reserved your academic apparel and wish to rent it, you may do so at Graduation Etc, (A-Level, Ackerman Union), or via their website. Once you login, select Master’s Cap, Gown, Hood and Tassel. Choose Public Health MPH hood (salmon color); PHD hood (blue); or MS hood is gold/black tassel. For best service and sizing, please place your order early. Should you need further information about renting caps and gowns, call 310.825.2587.

Conferring of Degrees

Diplomas

Diplomas are produced by the UCLA Office of the Registrar. The name that is reflected in your official university record (not your preferred name) will appear on your diploma. If you would like a different name to appear on your diploma, please complete the Name Change or Correction form and return it to 1113 Murphy Hall no later than the last day in your degree-expected term in order to be reflected on your diploma.

The Registrar’s office will mail out diploma information approximately six weeks at the end of your degree term (Winter graduates will receive their information in June; Spring graduates will receive their information in August).

If you would like your diploma mailed to you, download and print out this form. Fill in the required information and send it to the address on the form, along with your choice of payment options.
