While obtaining the knowledge and skills that prepare them to make their mark after they graduate, students at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health benefit from a wide array of services designed to strengthen their job-search, interviewing, negotiating, and professional networking skills — all toward the goal of equipping them with the tools, confidence, and community they need ensure their professional success. Mindful that these services are vital beyond students’ time at FSPH, the school also offers them to UCLA Fielding graduates through the entirety of their careers.

Career and Professional Services

FSPH uniquely offers recent and longtime FSPH alums the ability to continue taking advantage of the services offered through FSPH’s Career and Professional Development Office (CPDO) and the central UCLA Career Center. The CPDO prioritizes assisting alums regardless of how many years have passed since their graduation.

Among the services available to them through this FSPH office:

  • Individual and small-group career counseling
  • On-campus recruiting for internships, fellowships, and jobs for both non-academic and academic careers
  • Peer-to-peer learning workshops on résumés, cover letters, LinkedIn, interviewing, and negotiating
  • Gallup Strengths Finder assessment, strengths-based professional development, and strengths coaching
  • Employer “Lunch and Learn” events and information sessions
  • Mock interviews
  • Strategic job offer and salary negotiation trainings
  • Career fairs and employer showcases
  • Networking events with other FSPH graduates

Today, I'm very confident in my marketability and ability to navigate switching positions, but I still reach out to the office for that extra support and reassurance because they are always so welcoming and helpful, even years after I've graduated.

Connecting Online

All UCLA Fielding graduates can connect and network with fellow alums online in several ways:

  • Listserv: Graduates can subscribe to a professional development listserv that keeps alums informed of job, fellowship, professional development, and FSPH engagement opportunities. The listserv is private, moderated, and exclusively available to UCLA Fielding alums. Once they have subscribed, graduates can share announcements regarding public health jobs, fellowships, networking opportunities, and professional development events.
  • LinkedIn: Graduates can also network with FSPH colleagues through the school’s LinkedIn network group.
  • Handshake for Alums: UCLA Fielding graduates have access to Handshake online job postings and resources, offered exclusively to UCLA alums, for one year after they graduate. Beyond that period, they can gain additional access through a six-month subscription.
  • UCLA ONE: FSPH graduates can join the growing network of graduates at UCLA ONE, designed as a “one-stop shop” to meet UCLA alums’ professional needs while keeping them connected with the university.

Promoting Continued Success

FSPH graduates have a strong record of professional success — in a CPDO survey of recent UCLA Fielding alums, one year after completing their degree the vast majority held jobs, with employment rates above 90% for most programs. The services provided to graduates on an ongoing, as-needed basis help to ensure that they continue to find fulfilling, impactful positions for the duration of their careers.
