UCLA Fielding announces new chair for the Department of Biostatistics
After nearly nine years of service as chair of the Department of Biostatistics, Dr. Sudipto Banerjee will step down on June 30 and transition to the role of UCLA Fielding’s senior associate dean for academic programs on July 1.
Dr. Damla Senturk, a professor in FSPH’s Department of Biostatistics since 2011, will begin service as the new chair for the Department of Biostatistics on July 1. “I am thrilled that Dr. Senturk will become the new department chair, said Dr. Ron Brookmeyer, dean of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. “The Department of Biostatistics has a long tradition of excellence, which I’m certain will continue with Dr. Senturk at the helm.”
Dr. Senturk’s primary area of research is the development of statistical methods for the analyses of longitudinal studies and complex data, and application of the methods to important health challenges including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and end stage kidney disease (ESKD). Dr. Senturk has been continuously funded by multiple National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 grants as principal investigator for more than a decade and currently leads two NIH funded multidisciplinary research groups that develop novel statistical models for biobehavioral data from children with ASD and for multilevel outcomes in patients with ESKD.
After earning her doctor of philosophy degree from UC Davis in 2004, Dr. Senturk went on to join the faculty in the Department of Statistics at Pennsylvania State University before joining the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health twelve years ago.
An elected member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), Dr. Senturk is a fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and past program chair of the Western North American Region of the International Biometric Society. She has served on study sections for the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and National Security Agency, as well as on advisory committees for professional societies including ASA, ISI and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
