UCLA Fielding School of Public Health to honor LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl for her efforts to reduce homelessness
UCLA FSPH will bestow Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl with its 8th annual Ruth Roemer Social Justice Leadership Award.
The UCLA Fielding School of Public Health will bestow Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl with its 8th annual Ruth Roemer Social Justice Leadership Award at a symposium taking place May 3rd at 6 pm at the UCLA Faculty Center. Kuehl is being recognized for providing funding and services for people who are homeless and for working to improve the health of citizens in Los Angeles County.
The award honors the late Ruth Roemer, JD, a longtime professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, who for more than five decades used her legal and public health expertise to promote health and social justice.
As representative of Los Angeles County’s Third District, Kuehl has led efforts to increase affordable housing and to make funds available for both crisis and permanent housing for Los Angeles residents. She has also worked to make it easier for residents to receive government-funded physical and mental health services as well as substance abuse treatment. Kuehl previously served eight years in the California State Senate and six years in the State Assembly. She has also taught both law and public policy at UCLA.
“It is a great honor to receive an award named after the inestimable Ruth Roemer,” Kuehl says. “It is especially gratifying to receive it from my alma mater, UCLA, and the Fielding School that has, for decades, focused on improving the health of our community.”
Following the award presentation, the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health will induct new members into its Alumni Hall of Fame. This year’s honorees include:
- Emily Feher, interim executive director at Teen Health Mississippi
- Michael Prelip, professor and chair of community health sciences at the UCLA Fielding School
- Myat Htoo Razak, director of the division of global programs within the HIV/AIDS bureau at the Health Resources and Services Administration
- Vonthanak Saphonn, rector at the University of Health Sciences of Cambodia and adjunct associate professor at the UCLA Fielding School
The UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, founded in 1961, is dedicated to enhancing the public's health by conducting innovative research, training future leaders and health professionals from diverse backgrounds, translating research into policy and practice, and serving our local communities and the communities of the nation and the world.
