UCLA Fielding School launches official collaboration with China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences
University representatives welcome delegates from Beijing to formalize commitment to joint research and training.
Delegates from China’s Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (CACMS), located in Beijing, visited the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health on Tuesday, May 30, to sign an official memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the school. The MOU is a symbol of collaborative commitment to advance joint research and training opportunities for students and faculty of both organizations.
The gathering to sign and commemorate the MOU was attended by senior leadership from across UCLA and the Fielding School of Public Health including Dean Jody Heymann and Associate Dean Zuo-Feng Zhang who welcomed Dr. Luqi Huang, an academician and vice president of China’s Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences along with five additional delegates from CACMS. At the ceremony, Dr. Huang shared, “This agreement allows us to leverage our respective strengths, establish multi-level and multi-field cooperation in personnel training and exchange, and carry out joint research. I sincerely hope our continued cooperation will result in major advances in our fields.”
Collaboration between the Fielding School and CACMS has begun. In cooperation with Dr. Yanming Xie, deputy director for the Institute of Basic Research in Clinical Medicine, CACMS and the Fielding School conducted a Global Leader Training Workshop for Epidemiology and Global Public Health in September 2016 and an advanced seminar of medical and public health education reform in March 2017. Planned forthcoming collaborative efforts include faculty and student exchange, additional research and training programs and a joint international symposium scheduled for next academic year.
The signing of the MOU was immediately followed by a celebration with all attendees, including Mr. Lushan Sun, deputy consul-general at the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles, and senior leadership from UCLA including Dr. Timothy Brewer, vice provost of interdisciplinary and cross-campus affairs; Dr. C. Cindy Fan, vice provost for international studies and global engagement; Dr. Ren Sun, associate vice chancellor for internationalization and senior associate dean of graduate studies at the David Geffen School of Medicine, Dr. Thomas J. Coates, director of the UCLA Center for World Health, Dr. Zhaoping Li, director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, and Dr. Cun-Yu Wang, associate dean for graduate studies at the UCLA School of Dentistry. Leadership in attendance from the Fielding School included Dr. Hilary Godwin, associated for academic programs, Kathleen Kiser, associate dean for administration, Dr. Michael Prelip, associate dean for practice, Dr. Roger Detels, director of the UCLA Fogarty International Training Program, and Dr. Ninez Ponce, director of the UCLA Center for Global & Immigrant Health.
“The China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (CACMS) is a national comprehensive institution for scientific research, clinical medicine and medical education, which is directly under the leadership of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, PRC. CACMS includes seventeen research institutes, six hospitals, one graduate school, and two branch institutes. It has 3,519 professional and technical personnel (including 1,270 senior professionals), 5 academicians, 4 national masters of Chinese medicine, 26 national principal investigators. Dr. You-you Tu received the 2011 Lasker Award in clinical medicine and the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, for her work of discovering artemisinin to treat malaria.”
