FSPH signs Memorandum of Understanding with Shandong University School of Public Health in China
Representatives from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health (FSPH) and the Shandong University School of Public Health in Shandong Province, China, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on October 8. The MOU is a symbolic agreement between the two schools to facilitate joint scientific research and training opportunities in global health.
“Shandong University is home to one of the top public health schools in China,” said Dr. Yifang Zhu, acting dean of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. “I greatly look forward to the many ways that our schools can work together to spark new research and training collaborations among our students and faculty to work toward our shared goal of improving public health, and can’t wait to see all that we will accomplish in the years to come.”
Dr. Zhu and Dr. Shixue Li, professor and dean of the Shandong University School of Public Health, signed the MOU in a ceremony attended by representatives from both schools, as well as leadership from across UCLA, including Dr. Ren Sun, associate vice provost of the International Institute. Xian Zhi Lu, scientific consulate counselor for the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles, also attended.
Although the MOU was signed this week, the relationship between the schools is not new. Dr. Wei Ma, who earned his PhD in epidemiology at the Fielding School, is a professor and assistant dean at Shandong University School of Public Health, and played a crucial role in the forming of the agreement.
In addition to Drs. Shixue and Fan, the MOU signing was attended by the following Shandong University faculty members and staff:
- Professor Hui Fang, dean of the Shandong University School of History and Culture
- Hongmin Jiang, deputy director of the Shandong University Department of International Affairs
- Wei Ma, assistant dean of the Shandong University School of Public Health
- Fengshou Sun, director of the Shandong University Department of International Affairs
- Professor Zhen Wu, director of personnel and professor of mathematics
In addition to Dr. Zhu, UCLA faculty members in attendance included:
- Sudipto Banerjee, professor and chair of biostatistics at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health
- Alexandra M. Binder, assistant professor of epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health
- Roger Detels, distinguished professor and director of the UCLA Fogarty Training Program at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health
- Gang Li, professor of biostatistics at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and director of UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Biostatistics/BASE Unit
- Michael Jerrett, professor and chair of environmental health sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and director of Center for Occupational and Environmental Health
- Vickie M. Mays, professor of health policy and management at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and director and distinguished professor of psychology in the College of Letters and Sciences at UCLA
- Michael Prelip, professor and chair of community health sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health
- Ren Sun, professor and senior associate dean of graduate studies at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and associate vice provost of the UCLA International Institute
- Dawn Upchurch, professor and vice chair of community health sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health
- Zuo-Feng Zhang, professor and associate dean for research at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health
- Hua Zhou, associate professor of biostatistics at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health
The MOU with Shandong University is one of 19 active MOUs between the Fielding School and institutions throughout the world.
